tag, you’re it! clean out your basement.

Why must you clean out your basements friends? Because your parents are moving in. Yippy!!

Ok. No really though. It will be a fun adventure. Nana and Papa are moving in for a short 3 months, with only a short weeks notice. Since space is limited here, the basement will need to transform into their bedroom. And though it is my low energy Monday, I need dig in. Clearly.

So the adventure begins with my two pump full caf (gasp!) mocha. Then onto the folding, sifting, stacking, and throwing; with use of any box, basket or container I can get my hands on.

After getting to the bottom of the floor to a sense of satisfaction, I am not liking what I am seeing. Or smelling. It is dark in color, crawling along the base of the trim under the table. I move the sleeping bags and ut-oh. Mold.

My goal to clear out the basement – accomplished. Torn apart? That was unexpected.

How did this happen? Mr. K is scratching his head. Is it from the retaining wall we put in?

Gee hon. I don’t think that is it. I think it’s from…er….when I have let Mr. C play with water in the kitchen sink.

That couldn’t cause enough water for all of this, Mr. K says.

Um. No, hon; your not getting the full picture. Um. Er. There was lots of splashing a couple of the times. I let him keep the plug in the sink, otherwise he would tantrum, and he was doing that all morning already. And there were some major issues of overflowing. I know I put a towel to protect under the cupboards, but know one time it was a little too late in the game, and the other time it was very saturated by the end. I was basically just glad to have him occupied for a bit. The last time I let him do it, and totally – no more after that time -  I had to mop up the floor with several towels. Ok. You look like you are getting it. Alright. I say this so you don’t go down some bunny trail of figuring this thing out. And kind of a relief to at least know this is the problem? No major plumbing or landscaping issues! That’s a relief, right? Um. And yea. I’m sorry.

And Mr. K, after a couple of serious deep breathes, and just one “are you serious?” accepts the news.

Googling what the heck to do, we land on e-how and learn we (yes, we as in he) need to pull off the icky sheet rock, toss, and investigate further damage. Good news! Insulation and studs are safely protected by plastic, moisture and mold-free. (also this confirms, yes, this water is simply from the trickling water park above).

So girls, what’s in your basement? Any area that could use some cleaning or clearing out? Hoping if there is anything uncovered it is a lost object for you to treasure, versus the dark secret I found, and then needed to reveal. Can’t wait to hear about it.

Get in gear girls. Mark, set, go!

what???? Does this mean new carpet and everything? Let me know if you need some Dick’s Drywall consulting, I’ll contact the man! You can patch without tearing out a whole sheet of sheetrock, it just takes a little something something. As for the challenge . . . I’m on my way to the dungeon. Geesh!

Wait and holy cow! What?! Tearing out walls was not supposed to be part of the clean-the-basement project!! Shoot! (oh, and way to navigate the potentially lethal marital conversations along the way, guys. impressive.)

But really? The basement is your challenge? *Sigh* Well, here I go. If I’m not back in 24 hours…

You can do it girls! I went for the fresh air today with my windows open and both front and back doors. Had fans blowing from every angle, and a dehumidifier to top it off. Seems that with the icky sheetrock outta here, we’ll be in good shape. We are mold-free and seems that the carpet will make it. But yes, a detour in events for sure. And Mr. K has some drywall to hang, cut and taping to do….yea. Thanks Mr. K.
